THE PALACE - Eps 4

Meanwhile in East Berlin, Marlene bravely leads her sister’s life. However, when a colleague picks her up for her first rehearsal with the star choreographer, Steven Williams, at the Friedrichstadt-Palast, she fails to hide behind a flimsy flu. In order not to have to dance, she starts an argument with Williams and is thrown out of the Palace. The choreographer cancels Chris’ solo. Marlene is clearly upset by what she has done, while Bettina enjoys being number one now.
In Bavaria, Chris argues with her father and grandfather about the outrageousness of Roland's actions and how much her mother suffered from the loss of her other daughter. Roland stubbornly insists that there were valid political reasons for his decision back then. Deeply hurt by this, Chris sets off on her journey home. At the last moment, father and daughter manage to reconcile for the first time.

In East Berlin, Marlene is visited by Chris' childhood friend Georg, who wants to say goodbye to her because his application to leave the country for West Germany has been approved. He quickly recognizes Marlene as not being Chris, while Marlene sees how much Georg loves her sister and that leaving for the West is above all an escape from his feelings.

Unexpectedly, daughter Lilia comes home. With childlike instinct, she realizes that this woman cannot be her mother and exposes Marlene.

Chris is detained at the border and put through a background check. The hours pass and she does not get to go home. Marlene is forced to take Lilia to the Palace for the audition. Filled with anxiety, Marlene waits for her sister in front of the building. Suddenly she sees her mother getting out of a cab. Rosa, who has been thrown into turmoil after Marlene's visit to the hospital, and who has now discharged herself from there to get some clarity, is looking for her daughter. In tears, mother Rosa and Marlene embrace each other. Finally, Chris arrives as well, having survived the harassment at the border.
