The first of the twelve subsequent trials, the trial against 23 doctors and medical officials, began a few days after the conclusion of the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg in December 1946. Eleven more trials followed, in which a total of 185 defendants were arraigned. They were put together in groups representing respectively a segment of the official organisation of the Third Reich, for example lawyers, diplomats, army officers and representatives of the German war industry.
Nuremberg, which, during the Occupation, became a kind of state within a state, witnessed some hundred prosecutors and more than twice as many defenders. In the winter of 1947/48 six trials were held with over a hundred defendants.
